DELTA GAMMA DIVAS
The Delta Gamma Divas may have “Divas” in their name, but they don’t show it on the field! They are our Champion Team of the Week because not only did they defeat their opponents by an average score of 21 points but they also maintained outstanding sportsmanship throughout the season.
When you ask them why they are so successful, they say it’s all about teamwork. They have practices outside of game night and also meet an hour before every game to practice as well. Anyone in their sorority is welcome to join their team, so they make sure that they work together to teach everyone, even people who have never played before, everything they know. Sportsmanship is also very important to them. In their words, “We believe all ladies should be classy on and off the field!” Mission accomplished, ladies!
HUNG LIKE A JURY
Hung Like a Jury considered other names for their team, which we won’t elaborate on here, but it was decided that this one fit on the shirt the best. As you may have guessed, these guys are law students, getting together during their first year of law school last year. All from the original team are not back; as they describe it, “Our team, through a glorious display of the democratic process, unanimously voted to boot a guy off the team last year. I don’t know if it was because of his bad attitude or the fact that he shaved his legs.” Apparently with this group, the furrier the better. But there are some teammates they probably won’t vote off…they say that Chuck Norris wears Kevin Hartley pajamas.
Hung Like a Jury was selected as the Champion Team of the Week because of their outstanding victory (14-7) against a highly ranked team and the high sportsmanship scores the team has accumulated throughout the season. Even with a few controversial calls against them, the team was able to maintain their composure and fight through to pull out the victory. We hope that they enjoy their new Champion hoodies…and that one day we can all get our hands on a pair of those Hartley pjs.
THE OREOS
The Oreos are a team with a lot of character…or should we say characters? This team has been together for 4 years and they claim that they hold try outs for their team every year and only take the best players. If that is the case, it is working for them. They were selected as the Champion Team of the Week because they have a perfect sportsmanship rating and a 2-0 record after beating a highly ranked team 19 to 13. In addition, The Oreos are the defending men's competitive league and all university champions.
What is the key to their success? It may be their 8-page playbook—which they claim to be selling to other teams for a hefty profit. It may also be Anthony Hopkins’ magical handlebar mustache. They are undefeated with it. In addition to the mustache, he wears his shorts inside out. Who knows where the true magic lies… Success may also be attributed to Seth and Tice rocking doo-rags on their heads—a tribute to Deion Sanders.
But, their success may just be because of Josh Stephen, who will go down in history as the longest tenured intramural athlete in school history. He is currently a 6th year Junior and plans on playing flag football for years to come. He should be entered into the Tennessee Flag Football Hall of Fame. We can only hope that he will wear his Champion hoodie when he gets inducted.
GUMDROPS AND LOLLIPOPS
Gumdrops and Lollipops sounds like such a light-hearted, fun name, how could you expect them to have game? That is exactly what they want other teams to think. When they came up with their name, they wanted a funny name so people would assume they were not very good and would take them lightly.
Now, not only do other teams not sell them short, but they are somewhat famous on campus. They have had several instances were some of their players have been walking on campus or sitting in class and random people have come up and asked if they played on Gumdrops and Lollipops.
They have known each other for over 10 years, having played sports together since they were kids. They say they never run actual plays during their games—they just run and try to get open and it usually works out! It is that positive attitude and confidence, not to mention sportsmanship, that has earned them the title of Champion Team of the Week—Congrats!
